Homework
The First Grade Team pushes your children to work hard mentally for over 6 hours every day at school. We believe that it is just as important for 6 and 7 year olds to PLAY, so, we are not going to be assigning weekly homework this year. That does not mean that your child has zero responsibilities when they get home! We would like to encourage all families who are able to enroll your Firstie in some sort of organized activity - scouts, sports, dance, art, SOMETHING where they are interacting with other children and doing meaningful activities. We also encourage your child to do something active every single day - jump on a trampoline, jog around the block, ride a bike, ANYTHING that gets them moving.
On an occasion, when your child may not be using their time wisely, I may send home incomplete school work for them to finish. This would always be accompanied by a note so you are aware of what needs to be done.
A few other times during the year we may have a "special" project that we send home to work on.
In addition to the above, students will soon be given "Book in a Bag" to take home to read. (Please take good care of these materials and send them back to school when due. Each lost/damaged books costs $10 to replace.) I hope you can establish some sort of routine that reading becomes something your Firstie just does daily. Read to them, listen to them read to you, take turns reading together... whatever gets them reading!
Thank you for working WITH the school to help educate well-rounded students!
